General Hospital remained a sensation throughout the 1980s, and I was there for it. The infamous wedding between Luke (Anthony Geary) and Laura (Genie Francis) garnered the highest ratings in soap opera history. When I had to miss a show, it was my turn to employ my younger brother to watch and tell me what happened. I developed a crush on bad boy Blackie, and wanted to be super-spy Anna Devane. Luke and Laura would eventually leave the show, (to return and leave again) and I witnessed the birth of their son and the death of Laura’s mother. ![]() I entered middle school and still I watched. ![]() Instead of playdates, I would rush home in the afternoons to catch what became my story. Within a few weeks I became more enchanted with the lovers’ adventures than my brother and sister were.įifth grade was hard. Despite our prohibition against weekday TV, with my mother at work it was easy to sneak an episode a day. I eagerly obliged my siblings who usually ignored me. I was overweight, beginning puberty, and preparing to enter a new public school. But when after school activities kept them away from the 3:00 pm show, they conscripted me to watch for them and report on the days’ episodes. They were young teens and eager to keep up with what was considered cool. ![]() My older brother and sister were first to follow the adventures that took place in the fictional Port Charles, New York. They are my family and like so much in my life right now, they have been taken away.
